FAQ
Straight answers to the questions companies ask most about fractional marketing leadership and outsourced marketing, from cost and scope to how engagements work. I'm Connor Abrams, a fractional marketing leader based in Southern California, and I lead Fraction Advisory, serving companies across California and remotely across the US.
1
What is a fractional marketing leader?
A fractional marketing leader is a senior marketing executive who leads a company's marketing strategy, team and budget on a part-time or contract basis. The company gets experienced marketing leadership without the cost of a full-time executive hire. A fractional marketing leader sets the plan, directs the people and partners who carry it out, and is accountable for results, usually while working with a few companies at once.
2
What is outsourced marketing?
Outsourced marketing means handing some or all of your marketing to an outside partner instead of building a full in-house department. It can cover one function, such as paid media, or the whole thing: strategy, creative, advertising, PR, social and demand generation. The best outsourced marketing includes senior leadership, so the work follows one plan instead of a set of disconnected vendors.
3
Fractional marketing leader vs. fractional CMO: what's the difference?
In practice they describe the same kind of role: a senior marketing leader working part-time or on contract. Fractional CMO is the more common search term and implies a C-suite title. Fractional marketing leader is broader and fits companies that want senior ownership of marketing without adding an executive title, or that need leadership plus hands-on execution rather than strategy alone.
4
What does a fractional marketing leader do?
A fractional marketing leader owns marketing strategy and results. Typical work includes positioning and messaging, go-to-market planning, budget and channel decisions, creative direction, demand generation, managing staff, freelancers and agencies, and reporting on pipeline and revenue. The difference from a consultant is accountability: a fractional marketing leader runs the function rather than only advising on it.
5
Outsourced marketing vs. a marketing agency: what's the difference?
An agency usually executes a specific type of work, such as ads, design or SEO, and is accountable for its deliverables. Outsourced marketing with a fractional leader starts from your business goals: one partner sets the strategy, decides where budget goes, and then runs or coordinates the execution across channels. Many companies use both, with the fractional leader directing the agencies.
6
When should a company hire a fractional marketing leader?
Common triggers are outgrowing founder-led marketing, spending on agencies and ads without a clear plan, flat growth despite rising spend, a product launch or rebrand, entering a new market, or losing a marketing leader. If no one on the team owns marketing strategy end to end and connects it to revenue, that is usually the moment to bring one in.
7
Is my company too small for outsourced marketing?
Usually not. Outsourced marketing exists so companies can get senior expertise without building a full in-house marketing department. Readiness matters more than size: a product or service that works, a budget to execute, and leaders willing to act on a plan. A defined project, such as a launch or campaign, is often the right first step for a smaller company.
8
What engagement options do you offer?
Through Fraction Advisory, there are three options. Project-Based Services: focused support for a clearly defined project or deliverable, such as a campaign or launch. Strategy, Creative and Digital Services: ongoing strategy, creative development and digital execution for growing businesses that need senior expertise without a full-time hire. Integrated Marketing Leadership and Execution: end-to-end leadership and execution across all marketing channels.
9
What marketing services are included?
Six core services: strategy and go-to-market, creative production, advertising and paid media across Meta, Google, LinkedIn and more, PR and communications, social media and community, and demand generation, including lead generation, email marketing, marketing automation and lifecycle campaigns. Each engagement uses the services your goals need; integrated engagements can include all six under one plan.
10
Can you act as our outsourced marketing department?
Yes. The Integrated Marketing Leadership and Execution option is built for businesses without a marketing team, or with a small one. It combines strategy, execution and management across PR, advertising, brand, content and demand generation, with one dedicated partner accountable for the whole program. It is a way to get full marketing coverage without building a full in-house marketing department.
11
Do you work with our existing team and agencies?
Yes. If you already have marketers, freelancers or agencies, I lead and coordinate them: setting priorities, reviewing work and holding partners accountable for results. I can also help you decide which roles to keep in-house, what to outsource, and when an agency relationship is no longer the right fit.
12
How does an engagement work?
Every engagement follows four steps. Discover: understand your business, challenges and goals. Strategize: develop a custom plan to create the biggest impact. Execute: bring the strategy to life across channels. Optimize: measure results, refine and scale for continued growth. The time each step takes depends on the engagement option and scope.
13
What results have you delivered for clients?
$5 Billion in marketing generated revenue since 2022.
14
How do you measure the success of outsourced marketing?
Success is measured against business goals agreed at the start, not activity. Typical metrics include revenue and pipeline influenced by marketing, qualified leads, customer acquisition cost, conversion rates through the funnel, referral volume and brand reach. Reporting is set up early so leadership, sales and finance look at the same numbers and trust them.
15
Do you work remotely or on-site in Southern California?
Both. Most work runs remotely, with in-person time for planning sessions, workshops, shoots and leadership meetings where it adds value. I'm based in Thousand Oaks and work with companies across Southern California, including Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, Ventura County and Santa Barbara, and remotely with companies anywhere in the United States.
16
Which areas of Southern California do you serve?
Companies throughout Southern California: Los Angeles and Los Angeles County, Orange County, San Diego County, Ventura County including Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village, Santa Barbara County, and the Inland Empire across Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Outside Southern California, I work remotely with companies across the US and Europe
